O-1A Visa: Skill
Extraordinary

Science, education, business and athletics

Aimed at individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary and sustained ability in fields such as science, education, business, or athletics, and who are considered part of a small percentage who have reached the top of their profession.

Required standard: "Extraordinary Ability." This is demonstrated by evidence of having received a prestigious international award (such as a Nobel Prize) or by meeting at least three of eight specific criteria (articles, memberships, high salary, etc.).

Sponsor: A U.S. employer, manager, or agent is required to file the petition on behalf of the individual or through a self-petition with your company.
 

Primary Purpose: To work temporarily in the U.S. on events, projects, or for a specific employer that requires your extraordinary ability.

Sponsor: Like the O-1A, a U.S. employer or agent is required to process the petition.

 

O-1B Visa: Extraordinary Ability

Arts, film and television

Aimed at individuals with a track record of extraordinary achievement in the arts (artists, musicians, designers) or the film and television industry (actors, directors, producers).

Required standard: Varies by field. For the arts, "Distinction" (a high level of achievement) is required. For film and television, "Extraordinary Achievement" (a degree of skill and recognition significantly above the ordinary).

Primary Purpose: To participate in specific artistic events, productions, tours, or projects in the United States.

Group 472

Primary Purpose: To accompany and assist O-1 visa holders to ensure the success of their activities in the United States.

O-2 Visa: Support Personnel
essential

Designed for support personnel critical to the performance of an O-1A (athletics) or O-1B (arts, film, television) visa holder. This may include coaches, trainers, key assistants, etc.

Required Standard: The individual must demonstrate that they possess critical skills and experience that are integral to the O-1 artist/athlete's event or performance and that cannot readily be performed by a U.S. worker. A prior work history with the O-1 holder is generally required.

Sponsor: Like the O-1A, a U.S. employer or agent is required to process the petition.
